5-7-2008 Pack 172 Planning Meeting
7:30-8:30pm St. Mark School Library

In Attendance:  Rich Kovach,  Michele Appleby, Evelyn Lesko, Julie Kovach, Michael Matis,  Brian Duca, Brian Kelly,  Kathy Rainey, Bob Tremallo, Helen Levine, Kevin Newcomb.

**April Pack Meeting:  -hosted by Dens 1 & 8. The meeting was well organized, the kids did a great job on their skit. A little confusion and time to fill when Friends of Scouting did not show up. The Tiger dens hired a magician to come, the kids seemed to, for the most part enjoy what he did.

**Archery Weeken:  -April 11th and 13th. We had several Webelos attend, some for the day and some that camped over. Troop 72 had stations set up and the Webelos scouts really enjoyed the Archery portion of the event. We learned that there is a porto potty that can be delivered to Roosevelt Park by requesting it from the town. Kevin Newcomb is going to try to find out who to contact and arrange it if possible for the Pack Campout May 17th. We also heard that Mr. Lobdell and Mr. Eannotti cooked up quite a storm for those scouts who camped over! Elk, venison kabobs, chili and more.

**Roundtable:  - Brian Kelly stated that he forgot to attend the April 8th Roundtable and felt terrible and offered to go to another to make up for forgetting. After looking over the previous month’s minutes, Brian Kelly was not scheduled to go, Brian Duca was and therefore the mix up of Brian’s may have had something to do with that. Brian Duca stated that he will attend the May Roundtable on May 13th and pick up the Scouting for Food bags.

**Fishing Derby:  - April 4/5th. Kevin Newcomb said we had 6 scouts and their chaperones attend, however no one camped over. Our scouts didn’t catch anything, but 1 leader caught a good case of poison ivy. Mike Matis attended the Derby the following weekend.

**Mystic Overnight April 25/26th:  - Bill Lobdell was not in attendance but those who were stated that this event should deffinetely be placed in rotatation with our Big Event destinations. We had 47 scouts and chaperones in attendance. We were the largest Pack to attend. Beluga whales were making faces through the tanks. The scouts went around to different learning stations, and the consensus was that they enjoyed the squid dissection the most. Some scouts went home after the morning tour while others chose to stay for day. The scouts also enjoyed the Titanic exhibit.

**Pack Campout – May 17/18th Roosevelt Forest:  - This event will be chaired by Kevin Newcomb. Kevin handed out a flyer with details and also will send via e-mail to all. Leaders need to get a head count to Kevin by May 12th Monday. Every scout must have a designated chaperone. Tigers may come for the day, all other scouts may camp overnight. Every scout/chaperone must bring their own tent, as the pack does not own any. Cubmaster Rich will be picking up some cooking equipment and Kevin will be doing the food shopping. Kevin needs volunteers to man stations for our scouts. Kevin – Map/compass/treasure hunt    Richie Kovach – Fire Building/safety  Rich Kovach – Camp cooking   Bob Tremallo – Knife Safety  First Aid – Helen Levine       Other stations that need to be manned are knot-tying, orienteering(identifying trees/plants). Scouts (class B uniform Saturday, class A uniform Sunday) should be arriving for set up around 12noon Saturday (having already eaten at home or bring a bag lunch) Afternoon activities will follow, Dinner(provided by the Pack) will be between 5 & 6pm and Campire program following dinner. In the morning will be Breakfast(provided by the Pack) followed by an all denomination Sunday morning service and then break down and clean up of camp. Please contact Kevin with any questions or if you can help. 378-5111 knewcomb@gmail.com

***May Pack Meeting – May 21st  - This meeting is to be hosted by Den 8. Kathy Rainey has scheduled a guest speaker an Army Soldier to come and talk to our scouts about the Pride of his Country. In lieu of a game this month our scouts will be writing a letter to a soldier. Scouting for Food bags will be distributed at this meeting as well.

**Memorial Day  Parade – May 26, 2008:  - This event will be chaired by Julie Kovach. We will meet at Academy Hill at the old oak tree at 1:30pm. At 1:45pm we will walk down to Main St to get our position in the parade. The parade kicks off at 2:15pm. The ceremony at Academy Hill begins at 1pm for anyone wishing to attend. All scouts should be in Proper Class A Uniform. However if it is really hot please consider shorts rather than pants. All scouts should plan on bringing a water bottle that they can carry, we do not want our scouts to get dehydrated if it is hot and have a problem. However please keep in mind, we do not have access to bathrooms that day. Julie will bring lanyards for standard size water bottles and got permission from the committee to purchase 40 @ .75/each. Webelos 2 scouts will carry our flags and banner this year, rather than “switching out” throughout the parade, this leads to confusion and a messy looking line up. Julie has purchased flags that may be carried by our scouts in the parade. No candy can be given out, according to BSA rules. At the end of the parade we will meet at the gazebo for our annual Pack photo. Drinks and a small snack will be provided to all of our marching scouts and parents. Parents if they choose to, may march behind our group of scouts. If parents are not marching with us, they need to meet us immediately following our march at the gazebo at Paradise Green. Every den must have at least 1 leader OR parent familiar with their scouts in that den march, so that there will be no scout wandering off either during or after the parade. Any questions or concerns should be directed to Julie.

***Pack Picnic – June 8th  - This event being chaired by Helen Levine and Darlene DeRosa is scheduled for 12noon – 4pm at the Pavilion 1 at Short Beach, please be sure to have your Town Sticker for your car so that you don’t get charged to get into the beach. They sent out the invite to all via e-mail and mailed each den leader a copy with a request of which dish their den should bring. The large bouncy house has been reserved and paid for and the ice cream truck is scheduled to come at 3pm.  Rich will look into getting grills from the Shriners and let Helen know. Helen is concerned about water safety and we need to make sure that parents are watching their scouts if they choose to allow them in the water. Every scout must have a chaperone. All RSVP’s should be in by May 28th. The Poisson’s have volunteered to run the games. Julie will contact Darlene with the e-mail of the Scoutmasters of our Den Chiefs. Anyone willing to volunteer to help out that day, please contact Helen or Darlene.

***Bluefish Game @ Harbor Yard – June 14th -

This event chaired by Brian Kelly. Tonight was the deadline to turn in ticket requests. At this point Brian has had 48 signed up to attend and some camping over. Those camping over may bring tents but may not use stakes. Leave camping gear in your vehicle, come in watch the game and when the game is over, they will have you go out to get your gear and then line up to re-enter. Brian should be getting the tickets roughly 2 weeks ahead and will distribute them to you.

***June Cross-Over Pack Meeting: -  June 18th – Roosevelt Forest – Discussion on this was tabled until the June PPM. Rich did display for the committee the beautiful Arrow of Light awards being made for our Webelos scouts who have earned this distinction by Scoutmaster Conner of Troop 71. Helen reminded us that Scouting for Food donations should be brought to this meeting as well.

Michele Appleby suggested that Julie post the Roundup 2008 on the website, Julie will do so and add the date as soon as next year’s calendar is ready and we have a date.

**Cubmaster Minute:  - Rich Kovach stated that McDonald’s was unable to approve the Car Show idea presented last month due to the manager stating that she tried to get the “higher ups” to approve her idea but they would not. Rich will adjust his work schedule to go to the Beardsley Park Leader meeting on May 20th to pick up supplies we will need for Roundup in September.

Rich wished all of our Moms in the Pack a very Happy Mother’s Day.

Next parent planning meeting will be June 4th at 7:30. All Cub Scout Pack 172 parents are invited!

Meeting adjourned at 9:10pm

Respectfully submitted by Julie Kovach filling in for Pack Secretary Michele Shedlock.
