This page provides information on Pack 343's Service Projects for 2005-06.& Both of these projects are Good Turn for America service projects and will count towards Scout (and Scouter) earning the Good Turn for America patch and a 2005 year segment.

Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food is a food drive, where Scouts collect non-perishable food items for local food banks

• This service project will be done in conjunction with Boy Scout Troop 343 and the Bolling Chapel
• Key Dates:
  • 11 Nov 05  -- distribute bags to Bolling and Bellevue family housing areas (0900-1200)
  • 12 Nov 05 -- collect bags/donations from Bolling and Bellevue family housing areas (0900-1200)
• Food donations will go to Bolling Chapel's Food Pantry and a local area charity
  • The Bolling Chapel Food Pantry will accept any non-perishable food-item, but is looking for the following items in particular:
    • Canned meat items (such as corned beef hash, tuna fish, salmon, Dinty Moore beef stew, potted meat food products, vienna sausages, etc.)
    • Spaghetti (boxes), spaghetti sauce (bottles or cans) and spaghetti sauce with meat (cans)
    • Rice-a-Roni (boxes)
    • Au gratin potatoes (boxes); mashed potatoes (boxes)
    • Sugar (2 pound box)
    • Peanut butter (plastic jars)  and jelly (jars)

Care Packages for Deployed Troops

Cub Scout Pack 343 is sponsoring its 2nd annual “Care Packages for the Troops” service project in conjunction with the 11th Wing Family Support Center. The care packages will be delivered to currently deployed Air Force and Army military members assigned to the 11th Wing and the Pentagon. Any 11th Wing and Pentagon units who have members deployed are eligible to pick up a care package from the Family Support Center and send it to their deployed troops. If there are “extra” care packages, they will be given to the USO to be sent to any deployed member of the United States Armed Forces. When we take the time to send a little part of home to the troops serving us all so far away from home, we play a part in making them feel appreciated and remembered. Please consider taking the time to send a few comforts of home to those military members serving us so proudly.

All scouts have the opportunity to take part in this wonderful project. Participation is completely voluntary. Scouts will earn their “Good Turn for America” patch by participating in this community program. The Good Turn for America campaign runs from 2004-2009 with a year segment patch given for each year the scout participates in Pack sponsored Good Turn for America service project.

How does it work?

•  Each scout fills a box, or as many as you would like, with all kinds of goodies. Boxes must be a certain size. (Please contact Robin Burne, 202-562-1676, to get your box.) There are many suggested items (see pages 2 and 3 of PDF file), but the list is by no means all inclusive. Last year, some scouts even wrote letters and included it in with all the goodies.
•  Do not seal the box.
•  If your box is gender specific, please put an “M” or “F” on the top of the box.
•  Bring the filled box to the Nov 17 Pack meeting at the Base Chapel.
•  Members from Family Support will be at the Pack meeting to receive the boxes from the Pack. They will take the boxes back to Family Support, add additional items to the packages if needed, and then properly seal the boxes.
•  Family Support will notify the 11th Wing/Pentagon units of the available care packages for deployed troops.
•  Members from those units will pick up the care packages and send them to their deployed members. The deployed troops should receive the boxes in time for the holidays.

Popcorn Donations for Deployed Troops!

This year we will again be accepting popcorn donations for deployed troops from our popcorn fundraising campaign.  We will do this in conjunction with our booth sales later in Nov, but Scouts can also take orders for popcorn that will be donated to deployed troops.  So, if someone doesn't want popcorn for themselves, they may want to order popcorn as a donation to deployed troops.  We will turn all donated popcorn over to Bolling's Family Support Center in November to include in their care packages they will send out for the holidays.
